Join the Penn Fels Policy Research Initiative for its inaugural conference featuring faculty and keynote speakers addressing many of today's most pressing topics ranging from race and immigration, to gender and big data.

Speakers:

Dean Steve Fluharty

School of Arts and Sciences

Steven J. Fluharty was appointed Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Professor in July 2013 and has been a member of the Penn faculty since 1986.

Karen Glanz

Perelman School of Medicine and School of Nursing

Dr. Karen Glanz is the George A. Weiss University Professor and her research seeks to understand health behavior and improve it by educating and informing people and through public policy and organizational change. A globally influential public health scholar, Dr. Glanz’s work spans psychology, epidemiology, nutrition, and other disciplines.

Michael Jones Correa

School of Arts and Sciences

Michael Jones-Correa is Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught previously at Harvard and Cornell, where he served as the Robert J. Katz Chair of the Department of Government from 2012-2016.

Ajay Chaudhary

Keynote: Brooklyn Institute for Social Research

Ajay Singh Chaudhary is the founding Director of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and Lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University.

Maari Porter

City of Philadelphia

Maari Porter is the Director of Policy & Strategic Initiatives for the City of Philadelphia. Prior to this position, Porter served as the Executive Director of the Philanthropy Network Greater Philadelphia.

Dan Hopkins

School of Arts and Sciences

Daniel Hopkins is a political scientist whose research centers on American politics, with a special emphasis on racial and ethnic politics, local politics, political behavior, and research methods. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania, with a secondary appointment at the Annenberg School for Communication.

Iourii Manovskii

School of Arts and Science

Professor Manovskii is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, Associate Editor of Macroeconomic Dynamics, Research Affiliate at the Center for Economic Policy Research, a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn.

Dennis Culhane

School of Policy & Practice

Dr. Culhane is the Director of Research for the National Center on Homelessness among Veterans at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and he co-directs the Intelligence for Social Policy initiative (ISP). Dr. Culhane’s primary area of research is homelessness and assisted housing policy.

Amy Hillier

School of Design

Dr. Amy Hillier is an Assistant Professor in City and Regional Planning in the School of Design and holds a secondary appointment in SP2. She teaches classes in geographic information systems (GIS), research, and statistics in city planning, social work, public health, and urban studies.

Diana Lind

Moderator: Penn Fels Policy Research Initiative

Diana Lind is the founding managing director of the Fels Policy Research Initiative. Previously, she was the Director of Digital Audience Development for Philadelphia Media Network, which owns the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com.

Mark Alan Hughes

Moderator: Penn Fels Policy Research Initiative

Mark Alan Hughes is the Faculty Director of the Fels Policy Research Initiative and a Professor of Practice in City and Regional Planning at PennDesign. Dr Hughes is the founding faculty director of Penn’s Kleinman Center for Energy Policy, a faculty fellow of the Penn Institute for Urban Research, a senior fellow of the Wharton School’s Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership, and a distinguished scholar in Arts and Sciences’ Fox Leadership Program.

This panel will explore recent research projects that use Philadelphia as their test case. Hopkins' work concerns behavioral science insights, while Glanz is looking at built environment adjustments that could improve health outcomes. Porter will speak to the city's role in working on new policy efforts.
